The moon will rise fully eclipsed by the Earth’s shadow this evening, 15 June 2011. However, Europe and North America will not witness the beginning of the eclipse because it will occur before the moon rises there.
The total eclipse, which will last for 1 hour and 40 minutes, will be visible from start to finish from eastern Africa, central Asia, the Middle East and western Australia. The next total eclipse will occur on December 10 2011 and will be best seen in Asia, Australia and Hawaii (USA).
Weather conditions will vary across Ireland and Britain this meaning not everyone will witness the eclipse. Scattered cloud will affect western regions during the late evening.
Astronomy Ireland has organised a number of Eclipse Watches at various locations nationwide starting at 10pm giving members of the public a chance to see the Moon through some of Ireland’s most powerful telescopes. Locations include Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Louth, Sligo and Waterford. More from astronomy.ie.
The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible from Europe and North America will occur on April 15, 2014.
