India’s ruling Congress party says its leader, Sonia Gandhi, has undergone surgery abroad and is likely to be away for about three weeks.
Party spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi did not give details of the surgery but said Thursday that it was successful. He said the party would be run by a four-member committee during Gandhi’s absence.
The nature of the 64-year-old leader’s ailment was not immediately known.
The Press Trust of India news agency said the surgery was conducted in the United States.
Gandhi, the Italian-born wife of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, declined to take the post of prime minister despite leading the party back to power in 2004.
